Nagendra Luitel

Mr. Nagendra Prasad Luitel is the Head of Research at Transcultural Psychosocial Organization (TPO) Nepal. He has been involved in mental health research for last15 years. Over the past years, Mr. Luitel has co-leadednumerousmulti-year and multi-country mental health research projects with various experts on global mental health. These included the programme for improving mental health care (PRIME) [www.prime.uct.ac.za], mental health beyond the facilities (mhBeF) [https://www.mhinnovation.net/innovations/ mental-health-beyond-facilities-mhbef], emerging mental health system in low and middle income countries (EMERALD) [www.emerald-project.eu/], and E-mhGAP Intervention guide in Low and middle-income countries: proof-of-concept for Impact and Acceptability (Emilia) [http://tponepal.org/category/ongoing-projects/]. The results of these research projects were instrumental to transforming the mental health care landscape in Nepal from hospital-based, specialist-delivered services to community-based services with a task-sharing approach. His research projects have also contributed towards assessing mental health problems and service needs among people affected by conflict and other humanitarian emergencies which are important for program development. He has also contributed to the development, adaptation, and contextualization of mental health instruments for their implementation in Nepal to improve the validity of these epidemiological studies.
